India and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering peace and stability in the ASEAN region while enhancing their bilateral relations across various sectors. During high-level talks held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, the two nations emphasized mutual cooperation in defense, health, culture, and infrastructure development.

    Historical and Strategic Context

Indonesian Defense Minister Mr. Prabowo Subianto highlighted the historical ties between India and Indonesia, referencing the Bandung Conference of 1955, which symbolized South-South cooperation. He also expressed appreciation for India’s recent support for Indonesia’s membership in the BRICS grouping, which the country formally joined on January 7, 2025.

    Infrastructure and Business Opportunities

Indonesia invited Indian business groups to invest in its infrastructure sector, including ports, airports, and railways. The country is also keen to replicate Indian social and developmental schemes, with plans to encourage Indian hospital chains to establish facilities in Indonesia.

Indian healthcare systems, training programs, and social welfare schemes have attracted the attention of Indonesian policymakers, with Mr. Subianto expressing interest in having Indonesian doctors and technicians trained in India.

    Defense Cooperation

Recently, Indonesia ratified its defense cooperation agreement with India. Mr. Subianto announced plans to send a high-level defense delegation to India to further explore avenues of collaboration in defense manufacturing, supply chains, and advanced technologies.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined areas of mutual interest, including:

    • Maritime Security: Strengthening efforts to maintain freedom of navigation and secure trade routes in the region.
    • Cybersecurity and Counter-Terrorism: Joint initiatives to address emerging security threats.
    • De-Radicalization Programs: Sharing knowledge and strategies to combat extremism.

    Cultural and Historical Bonds

Prime Minister Modi referred to the ancient trade ties celebrated through the ‘Bali Jatra’ festival in Odisha. He also announced India’s commitment to contribute to the conservation efforts at the Prambanan Hindu temple in Java, Indonesia, a symbol of the shared cultural heritage between the two nations.

    Strengthening ASEAN Peace and Stability

Both leaders reiterated the importance of peace and stability in the ASEAN region, emphasizing the need for collaboration to address geopolitical challenges.

    Conclusion

India and Indonesia’s growing partnership is a testament to their shared vision of regional stability, economic growth, and cultural preservation. With a focus on infrastructure, healthcare, and defense cooperation, the bilateral relationship is set to benefit both nations and contribute to the broader goals of ASEAN and BRICS.
